What the first two weeks look like

Software rollouts in construction fail in the field, not in the office. Here is honestly how this goes, including the part where a couple of your foremen don't want to do it.

  • Week one: projects, crews, and your certification records loaded
  • Week two: one crew, one job, running it for real
  • Then the rest, once that crew can show everyone else it's faster
  • Nobody needs training on the phone app — it's seven buttons

Week one — setup, and it's mostly us

Your projects and your crew roster go in. Your certification and training records come across from whatever spreadsheet they live in now. Somebody who knows your safety program spends an hour or two with us reviewing the hazard library and the inspection forms and telling us what to change. You do not build content from scratch — it's already there and you're editing it.

Week two — one crew, for real

Pick one job and one foreman, ideally a good one who is skeptical rather than a volunteer who loves gadgets. He runs his JHA and his toolbox talk on the phone every morning for a week. That's it. What you're looking for is whether it's genuinely faster at 6 a.m. in the cold, because if it isn't, no policy is going to save it.

Then everyone else

The thing that rolls it out is your first foreman telling the others it takes two minutes instead of twenty. Field training is about ten minutes — the phone app is seven buttons on one screen. The people who need real training are the office side: your safety manager on investigations and reports, and your admin on forms and settings. Plan a couple of hours for them.

Where it goes wrong

Two ways, and both are avoidable. The first is trying to switch every crew on every job in one week — do it one crew at a time. The second is leaving the paper process running alongside it 'just in case,' which guarantees everyone does both and concludes the software made things worse. Pick a date, and after that date the JHA is in the app.
